Review of Amelia (2009) by Ray P — 21 Feb 2010
I expected a good movie about an infamous mystery and a role Hilary Swank seemed born to play. This film, by director Mira Nair, far exceeded my expectations. The supporting cast is also first rate - Richard Gere, Chris Eccleston, Ewan McGregor, et al.
The biggest mystery isn't what happened to Amelia Earhart but what happened to all the Oscar nominations this film should have received! The cinematography is breath-taking and the acting all top notch.
The Oscars continue to "set things up" for outcomes that, regretably, are predetermined. Why threaten Sandra Bullock's only chance at ever getting an Oscar by putting her up against 2-time winner, Swank (who would have passed Meryl Streep had she won for this movie). Could it be prejudice against a strong female character in a movie made by a strong-willed, female Indian Director (who is immensely talented)? I hate to say, these burning questions took away some of the enjoyment in viewing this movie because I only got angry at another great film/performance buried by the Hollywood machine.
