Review of Amelia (2009) by Richard C — 11 Feb 2010
I wish I could have a tremedous amount of praise for this film. I wish this movie could have been what it had the potential to be. But it's a deeply flawed production. Most of the flaws are due to the usually solid direction from Mira Nair who has a hard time grasping and conveying the material on screen.
It's no doubt a pretty looking picture with nice cinematography, costume design and such but it lacks authenticity and doesn't feel genuine in the least. Instead it feels like a play by play of the events during Earhart's pilot career.
The romance between Gere and Swank feels forced and so does her affair with Macgregor. As an audience we really aren't given any insight into who she really was or what drove her. Swank gives a solid performance but there are a few touches that make it seem awkward at times.
It's just a shame with such interesting subject matter the film only manages to be mildly entertaining with a bit of suspense thrown into it's sad finale. All in all worth a watch nonetheless.
