Review of Amarcord (1973) by Daniel D — 13 Jun 2012
A highly imaginative coming of age film, set in a rather strange town in the heart of 1930's italy. It has a overall very funny comedy backbone, which is often utilized as a safety net when the film becomes too abstract for modern audiences to handle.
Every character in the film has a charismatic role to play, even though at first, the vast number of characters maybe overwhelming, soon each character has it's own role in the film, this then firmly ensures that the viewer can be emotionally attached to each and every character.
Its art house feel does tend to grow tiresome at some points, if this film wasn't as funny as it was, then it would been quite a poor film I feel. There is a clear plot involved and it is one of those "not a lot happens" film, though in an individual characters context there are several stories interloping, it isn't a "crash" scenario where each story fits into another like a complex puzzle it is simply a theme of a little Italion town that binds them all.
This film is certainly a must see, and a pleasure to watch. As the name suggests (amarcord - I remember), it is a not film that is easily forgotten!
