Review of Amadeus (1984) by Niamh E — 01 Sep 2010
Despite it's length (3 hrs 20 mins), I found myself held and interested to the end, even if Mozart's laugh was getting to me a little. Composing music from the age of 7 to almost his final moments, this is a dramatic portrayal of the life of musical genius.
The oscar winning performance of F Murray Abraham portraying Salieri is certainly worth the acclaim. He plays his role with almost goosbumpy evil, clearly being influenced by Iago and Dracula. In the concluding scenes, he resembles the legendary vampire with his hair tight, black clothes with white cravat and the way he holds the candleabra.
Yet the portrayal of the lead is not ot be underestimated. This is also a winning performance. The only fault I can really find may be its accuracy, and the fact that the wofe doesnt look a day older at the end than she does in the begining.
Being based on the Peter Shaffer play, of course the historical accuracy is called into question anyway though.
