A film adapted from a British play with an American cast about an Austrian composer of German operas resented by an Italian composer and what is the verdict? A fabulous piece of period drama as sublime as Mozart's concertos, as thrilling as his operas and as dark as Salieri's intentions.

Not once blunted by length and not once let down in any technicality, this film is an example of pure entertainment with the subtlety of a supreme director. F.Murray Abraham's performance only just manages to oust Tom Hulce's due to his perfect accent modification work, but Hulce's American gags and accent add flavour.

Thus, a SOLID PIECE OF MOVIE MAGIC.
