Review of Amadeus (1984) by Aditya C — 03 Jun 2014
A vastly entertaining telling of Wolfgang Mozart's rival and his failure to achieve the artistic success of the greatest composer of all time, "Amadeus" is a thematically complex look at a man who wants only to make bountiful music but lacks the talent of Mozart, whose brilliant compositions took the world by storm.
Along the way the Mozart is ingeniously portrayed as a clumsy goofball with the most annoying laugh but underneath the comical exterior, we see a true genius who writes music to absolute perfection in the first and only drafts.
His complex relationship with his father is another layer to his character's complexity. The film also uniquely blurs the lines between diagetic and non-diagetic music in a way that adds to the story.
"Amadeus" is a brilliant, funny, dramatic, and provocative picture that could not be more perfect.
