Review of Amadeus (1984) by Howie V — 29 Dec 2010
It's exaggerated but where do you draw that line? Is there a need to? It's not a documentary. It's entertainment. I'm sure if Mozart were alive today he'd say "To hell with reality. Tell your story." The film doesn't portray Mozart as your standard statuesque musical entity. If you want that read an encyclopedia. In the movie he's just as much an idiot as you or I...well, probably, more like you than I ").
You forget that he actually had a very personal life but long before there were ever rock stars...right? Tom Hulce simply WAS Mozart. He was probably more of a "Mozart" than the actual Mozart; akin to watching Gwen Stefani out-Madonna Madonna. The movie was just on point. I define a classic as one that sustains itself through multiple exposures and Amadeus certainly meets that criteria. His birthday's coming up. I'll probably watch it again. Two thumbs up!
"If his father was not a music teacher would we know of Mozart?" - Garry Kasparov.
