Review of Amadeus (1984) by Mateo S — 24 Dec 2012
Entertaining and beautifully shot historical fiction. The sets, costumes, and lighting are all superb. The music coupled with the scenes of Mozart conducting, and Salieri looking on in wonder and resentment are really powerful stuff.
I watched the Directors Cut, so I'm not sure what the extra 20 mins is. I'm guessing longer opera scenes. All the acting is top notch too. Tom Hulce as Mozart is a little jarring at first, but he really grows on you over the course of the film.
It was also refreshing that they didn't try to shoe horn any faux British or (god forbid) German accents into this. Even at 3 hours, it's engaging from beginning to end. I have one complaint, but it's sort of a spoiler.
It didn't ruin the movie or anything.
