Review of Always … But Not Forever (1985) by Melanie B — 24 Jul 2010
ALWAYS: What a weekend. David (Henry Jaglom) and Judy (Patrice Townsend), real-life ex husband and wife, play out their relationship?s end (or re-beginning) in the house where they actually lived. An intensely personal film.
Had I actually been there for the 4th of July weekend, where Judy and David are joined by best friends Lucy (Joanna Frank) and Eddie (Alan Rachins), I probably would have gone crazy, especially after they?re joined by Judy?s sister Peggy and her boyfriend.
But being a fly on the wall and observing these couples deal with their issues and each other was fascinating. Lots of funny moments and poignant ones, as well. The question remains ? when is a relationship really over, especially if you still love each other? Jaglom?s in-your-face, improvisational style makes for a sharp level of reality.
Are the lines blurred between acting and real life? I really enjoyed this film. See it and decide for yourself. .
