Review of Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked (2011) by Marcus T — 07 Feb 2012
I think the movie was really good at targeting a specific audience: the ones who enjoyed the 80's cartoon and have at least some interest in the modernized franchise. The string of pop culture jokes however were a bit outdated, better suited for a 2008-2009 showing than 2012. As a fan of the franchise, I really enjoyed it, as did all 5 kids I took to see it, none of whom were big fans of the Chipmunks.
There were definitely some things that could've been improved. Making it more stand-alone while crediting the characters we loved from the old show would've been better, rather than relying so much on them, as well as not relying a great deal on events (and villain) of the previous movies. It focused too much on the middle-ground characters, Simon and Jeanette, and too little on the youngest (Eleanor and Theodore) and too blandly on the bigger stars (Alvin and Britney).
That said, the animation was incredible, with the best CGI the could offer, and is the best of their movies to date.
