Review of Altered States (1980) by Colin D — 22 Jun 2008
I returned to this old "horror???" classic out of boredom. I haven't seen it since I was a kid, and now it just doesn't seem as cool anymore. Perhaps because i've run into too many people like William Hurt's character working at a university, that of a pontificating, egotistical young professor, which in his human state is far more terrifying than his altered state of the club-wielding neanderthal or lumpy thing with bad reception.
Despite their constant criticism of 60's drug culture experimentation. uhh. . it's about 70s drug culture experimentation, which in this movie proves to be far more potent as he opens the very fabric of time and space by floating in salt water and taking mushrooms.
No real endearing character in the movie, and it reminds me of social settings I frequently walk out of. Had he not turned into a caveman halfway, I would have walked away from this one too. Were this a remake candidate, i'd say more caveman and less talking.
