Fantastic special effects can't save a convoluted plot that dabbles in occult mysticism, religious hallucinations and bizarrely explained science. The creepy vibe when first seeing the protagonist in the tank is as legitimate as the rush when we first see what he becomes with enough concentration, but that is about all that ends up working for the movie besides the effects.

I maintain that William Hurt is an awful actor.
