Review of Altered States (1980) by Peter K — 04 Apr 2010
I've always seen references to this movie in various other tv shows and films, most notably South Park; by some chance I got wind of it again in an interview to Gaspar Noe one of my favorite directors. So I saw it at last and I loved it. First of all I love all the really clever visual effects. A lot of movies in the 80's went this way with all the animatronics and puppet and visual trickery that seems much better than an excess of CGI. The movie was also awesome weird(80's STyle think Jacobs Ladder) and had a really creepy atmosphere. The script was really complex dealing with really scientific and philosophical stuff which made it better and not to say credible, but plausible, even in all its weirdness.
I hope Gaspar Noe really gets to do a sequel from this material because I would love to see his crazy, screwed up , violent vision of Altered States.
