Altered States is the best kind of visually creative. It helps the story, it's not overwhelming and monotonous, and it just looks really cool. There were some scary moments but for the most part it was just solid and entertaining.
Even when you have no idea what's going on, you can't look away. The drug trip sequences are extremely well shot. This should be considered kinda like a really well done B-Movie that's very entertaining and has great special effects.
