Review of Altered States (1980) by Troy C — 21 Dec 2007
OK, so this film has its flaws but I don't think it's as awful as this Flixster synopsis claims or other reviews. The hallucinatory montages were well done and probably one of my favorite parts about this film.
I love the whole concept of this film, trying to tap into a collective unconscious and discovering something intangible. However, the transformation sequence where Hurt's character is some sort of ape/monkey/beast is distracting as is the love story and brings the movie to an unsatisfactory close.
Aside from those large chunks of the film, it felt as though it was headed in the right direction at the start. If I had the ambition to direct and wanted to do a remake, re-imagining or whatever, this would be the film.
