Review of Altered (2014) by Angel M — 29 Oct 2009
ALTERED is a horror flick from director Eduardo Sanchez who also co-wrote the film with Jaime Nash. You may remember Sanchez as half the team who brought you the highly successful BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. Unlike its predecessor, ALTERED doesn't really break any new ground but it does hit the ground running.
The film opens promisingly with three very nervous good ol' boys stalking through the Florida backwoods; Otis, Cody, and Duke. We quickly learn that they are huntin' aliens and have been for the past 15 years, ever since they and 2 of their friends were abducted, experimented upon, and one of them died, never to be seen again.
As I said a very promising beginning, and the film holds together extremely well for the first third or so until the buddies who have now gathered at the isolated fortress home of Wyatt (the other survivor) start bickering over what to do with their captured alien.
Its at this point that things start to fall apart and the film becomes tedious and cliched; plot holes abound, illogic runs amuck, and a couple of times we have to ask ourselves WTF? Still there is enough good here to put this at about a 3 star rating.
The monster is rather impressively designed and executed, some of the actors are quite good too I especially liked Mike C. Williams as Otis (Williams also appeared in BLAIR WITCH) and Brad William Henke as Duke is a loveable ol' redneck if there ever was one.
There's also one good gore scene that should make almost anyone wince, for those who are into that sort of thing.
