Review of Alphaville (1965) by Jj M — 08 Apr 2011
Freakishly surreal and oozing with post-modern genius. Utterly engaging mainly due to a deeply composed performance from Eddie Constantine and a floatedly deranged turn by Anna Karena. Godard takes on many genres (detective/french chic/sci-fi/romance/european drama) and I can only commend his craft in being able to match them together in a such a plausible way.
No sci-fi film has ever managed to stir up credible futuristic atmosphere without the application of some effects or other but it can be witnessed here in this rarity.
