Review of Alphaville (1965) by Kim W — 01 Jan 2010
ALPHAVILLE - JEAN-LUC GODARD's dystopian film about the 'perfect' society with only one flaw - one man knows the meanings of words. Words such as 'why' have deleted from the dictionary and are no longer used because the meaning is irrelevent in a perfect society.
The film was reminiscent of the CHINESE REVOLUTION [which is the subject of GODARD'S later film] but unfortunately was choppy. Several scenes are unexplained and really not enlightened through the story line.
It is a visionary piece with GODARD's experimental use of subliminal images but unfortunately becomes just TV movie of the week hype.
