Review of Alpha Dog (2006) by Wesam E — 23 Sep 2009
This is apparently a film for youth about youth. Frankly, they can have it. Watching a bunch of slackers sitting around smoking weed and saying "what the fuck, man" over and over, isn't my idea of a good time.
An eye boggling array of Hollywood stars (particularly the young ones) have again shown good faith in John Cassavetes' son by taking part in this depiction of the overprivileged, underworked L.A. Gen Y. They are all pretty good, particularly Ben Foster, who gives his typical over the top, loony, scenery chewing performance, and a very young looking Anton Yelchin pre wacky, Russian accented Star Trek Enterprise fleet member.
There is a certain degree of mounting tension in the unravelling of the story, you just wish there wasn't so much meandering nothingness along the way.
