Review of Alpha Dog (2006) by Michel G — 27 Aug 2010
Tragic crime/drama based on a true story about young drug dealers in Southern California who hold the younger brother of one of their indebted clients for ransom, but things get complicated when the brother shows signs of Stockholm Syndrome.
Despite being slightly unrealistic and having a few questionable twists for some of the characters, I found this rather engaging thanks to some charismatic performances from the leads and a gripping plot.
No one in the film is 100% likable, but "Alpha Dog" somehow gains your sympathy for them by drawing the viewer into the criminal underworld just as the hostage is with moments of intriguing interplay and occasional stoner humor.
Moreover, the gloss, conflict, and ultimate consequences are actually the shroud for a strong anti-drug message.
