Review of Alpha Dog (2006) by Bolivar B — 20 Sep 2010
This is the dark version of Beverly Hills 90210. Events quickly spin out of control in this true story of kidnapping and murder in 2000-era Los Angeles. This is a riveting, cautionary tale that has an almost news-like aura.
This is not my world, but the characters comer off as realistic. None of them seem like caricatures, which would have been the easy, sensationalist way to portray this crime. No, the bare truth is shocking enough, and director Cassavetes elicits superb performances to tell this story.
Justin Timberlake is a surprisingly good actor, and of course Emile Hirsch, who I loved in Into The Wild, is fantastic. His range is astounding. Sharon Stone is appropriately pitiful; I didn?t like her makeup, but I think Bruce Willis?s was appropriate, unlike one reviewer.
Alpha Dog is a sensational docudrama not easy to forget.
