Tense and emotionally engaging, Alpha Dog benefits from a strong and youthful cast while its director's lack of focus makes it impossible for the film to reach its full potential. The film offers a poignant critique on a society that deems people like Johnny Truelove (Hirsch) a person worth emulating.
It attempts to illustrate that in the quest for power it is usually the most violent and heartless who end-up being stripped of all strength. Ultimately, the dog is lacking some bite.
