Sometimes the best thing about a plot is the fact that it actually happened. Were it not for its true-story roots, Alpha Dog could easily be disregarded as another flashy display of teenagers at their most impulsive and dangerous.
Nick Cassavetes recognizes this fact and treats the film with documentary-esque pacing, adding palpable weight to the scenes and relevance to the otherwise unremarkable script. While largely confined to the actions of their sources, the cast (mostly) performs with no-nonsense fervor and the result is an entertaining and sobering crime drama.
