Review of Alpha and Omega (2010) by Macaleb M — 14 Oct 2010
Four years after "Happily N'ever After" flopped out of trying to be the next "Shrek", Lionsgate gives animation another try as they release a new animated film from Crest Animation Studios and director Richard Rich ("The Fox & The Hound"), "Alpha and Omega".
The film, which features the voices of Justin Long, Hayden Panettiere, and the late Dennis Hopper, tries to combat other animated films with its family appeal. Although it is quite obvious that it's animation doesn't even hit the standards that Pixar and DreamWorks have to offer, it doesn't really matter.
Now, a lot of people might think this is another film that will have ugly humor that will cause them to roll their eyes, but, in fact, that type of humor is very little in this film, which is good so the main plot can be more focused on. Now, the plot is predictable and the action is a bit quiet (probably barely avoided the G rating), but there's something about this film that just makes you smile. It actually reminded me of "The Lion King" in some way, so, sure, Alpha and Omega isn't the year's best animated film. But, it has a better family appeal than some of the rest of its' 2010 animated competition, which should help start turning the tides for Lionsgate. A very enjoyable film!
Age group: Children ages 5 and up (under age 5 may need parental guidance because of its' PG rating).
Four stars out of five.
