Review of Alpha (2018) by Jon H — 21 Aug 2018
Perhaps an in depth analysis of this movie isn't as important as everyone who sees it getting something different;, exactly what they need. For me, this film resonates as having a mythological quality that is unique aside from obvious historical referencing (hunting via directing the herd off a cliff, etc.
).. I really like how the costume designer and casting director played a central role in not only setting the tone but weaving the story around. It worked because of it's post-modern approach to what it means to have 'tribe' in modern day society.
Subcultures like the Rewilding movement, or the Native Peoples community reemergence or just our connection to and love of animals and nature make for a solid Disney-esqe experience, without the pop culture dominance / dogma.
People want to be brought to that sweet spot inside when watching a movie and for me Alpha did that.
