Review of Along Came the Devil (2018) by Rb S — 07 Sep 2018
A familiar storyline with an ending you won't see coming.
If you are a fan of possession films, this is a promising good-looking indie film within the horror genre. But, the reviews both good and bad are exactly why I want to watch movies in the first place.
Most everyone compares films from the storyline down to the budget. Granted this is very a familiar storyline, but this first-time filmmaker shows how to make a decent movie with a small budget.
It's well lit, with some great scenes that stand out, particularly the time lapse overnight to the morning!
The camera work is solid and it doesn't have many fixed position shots, which keeps it easy to watch and fluid. The film also uses quite a bit of traditional special effects, like broken bones and the evil one himself, which are an added bonus. Not to worry there is a touch of CGI to bring things alive as well.
They assembled a solid quality cast with Sydney Sweeney leading the way. She is fully invested in her character Ashley and plays the possession scenes perfectly! Madison Lintz, Jessica Barth, Matt Dallas, and Bruce Davison all bring solid performances.
The ending is like nothing I've ever seen in this type of movie and it's the needed twist to set this indie horror film apart. Watch and enjoy.
