Review of Along Came Polly (2004) by Sara C — 02 Nov 2008
A big heap of rubbish. I know that romantic comedies are vaguely formulaic, but that's not an excuse to not try. The plot here is painfully, sledge-hammeringly obvious and the comedy cliched and old.
And here's the main problem. Reuben and Polly are seeing each other. Exactly where is the conflict here? Reuben decides he really likes Polly and so puts up with her lifestyle just to be with her.
When she realises he wants to marry her, she leaves. And it is Reuben who has the realisation scene, that she is the one he wants, and who runs after her. Exactly what realisation is he realising? He knows he wants to be with her.
She's the one who left. Someone put the wrong rom-com formula on to this bland film, just to make it even more rubbish.
