Review of Alone in the Dark (2005) by Tim B — 18 Aug 2008
With a few exceptions, no one likes watching other people play computer games. It's frustrating. Perhaps this is the answer as to why all movies based on computer games turn out to be a bit pants. Movies are meant to be watched while games are meant to be played. The story mechanics of both are completely different. Movie stories are designed to draw you in, game storylines are normally a simple premise for setting up the player action, particularly with games like Alone In The Dark.
It's for this reason that Alone In The Dark feels like it lurches from one exposition scene to the next, replacing the times when a gamer would be shooting the crap out of beasties with some poorly lit action sequences of people shooting the crap out of beasties. The cast are admirable but both Christian Slater and Stephen Dorff are criminally wasted in this as they negotiate a not too complex storyline about stopping some old guy from opening a gate way to a hell world and letting loose even more of the Aliens rip off creatures which are not even in the slightest bit terrifying to begin with.
This is a poor movie by normal standards but maybe its too harsh to judge it as so, because as brainless, late night rubbish it is kinda adequate.
