In my opinion this film is a step up from the first Alone in the Dark -- who actually thought that movie merited a sequel? Rick Yune gives a pretty good performance and Lance Henricksen is always worth watching.
I didn't think the SFX were bad or especially good either, just okay. The story was confusing. I never did completely understand what it was all about. Perhaps a second viewing would clear that up but I'm not overly likely to watch it again.
It was mildly entertaining viewing.
