Cameron Croweâ??s latest film, Aloha , stars Bradley Cooper as Brian Gilcrest, a disgraced military defense contractor, who returns to Hawaii to redeem himself with his former employer, Carson Welch (Bill Murray) & assist in the launch of a communications satellite. Because of Brianâ??s instability & past transgressions, General Dixon (Alec Baldwin) orders an Air Force watchdog, Alison Ng (Emma Stone), to keep him in check. Ng also attempts to revive Gilcrest's appreciation & respect for the spirit of the Hawaiian culture. In returning, Gilchrist must also face his feelings for a former love,Tracy Woodside (Rachel McAdams), now married to Woody (John Krasinski) with two children; a thirteen year old daughter, Grace (Danielle Rose Russell) & a nine year old son, Mitchell ( St. Vincent star Jaeden Lieberher.) Mitchell is fascinated with Hawaiian myths & believes that Gilchrist may be a player in some imminent spiritual event. Written & directed by Cameron Crowe, Alohais a complex redemption story about the dehumanizing effects of military conflict & individual alienation. I was disappointed by Croweâ??s lack of restraint, he gave away most of the movie's surprises in the first fifteen minutes rather than gradually reveal them throughout key moments of the film. But this may be the result of the amount of backstory that needed to be conveyed to the viewers. The performances from the cast which included Pineapple Express's Danny McBride as Gilchrist's former buddy, Colonel â??Fingersâ?? Lacy were all respectable. The chemistry between Bradley & Emma was sweet & charming. There was a lot of screen face time spent on the admittedly always appealing Cooper, Stone & Murray, which while enjoyable, might have been used to further illuminate some of the complexity of the story. Aloha is one of those films, that if you are a fan of the major players or you love a romantic ending, you will enjoy seeing in the theatre, otherwise you might want to wait for the DVD.
