Review of Almost Heroes (1998) by Jacob C — 25 Aug 2010
A lot of people trash on this movie, but I just love it. There's so many things about this movie that are a miracle. Sure, bad movies are being made every day, so it should come as no surprise that such an outlandish film could get made, but still, ALMOST HEROES has a lot going against it.
- Matthew Perry is the lead.
- It's essentially a comedy about Louis and Clark.
- It has a style of comedy that isn't like anything else.
Every time I watch this I am still dumbfounded as to how it ever got made, but I'm sure glad it did. This is one of those films where every single line is meant to elicit a laugh. Often enough, most shots are meant to do the same thing. I'm chuckling just thinking about their modest boat being rowed upstream ("What? Against the current?"). Another thing that makes this film great is that it truly allows Farley to take his horrible, profane drunk schtick to the absolute limit.
Endlessly quotable. Almost Heroes? Almost Perfect!
