Review of Almost Famous (2000) by Sheryl B — 05 Oct 2010
It's quite tragic to know that this film has been out for almost 10 years now, seeing how I was just now graced with it's presence on my not-so-deserving television.
In this retro-cool drama, Crowe creates an endearing story of a young journalist who intentionally follows a typical Rock and Roll group in order to pitch a one of a kind story to the legendary Rolling Stone Magazine. To his surprise, he finds himself on a nationwide adventure that teaches him more than he could have ever imagined about love, companionship, the spotlight of fame, and the sheer brutality of the music business.
Unforgettable performances by an all-star cast, including Hudson, who plays the controversial role of Penny Lane so perfectly, it makes me certain that anyone else would have been a complete miss.
I can't say that I'm surprised by the cleverness of this movie, based on Crowe's superior and more than impressive film record. It has easily made my list of top ten favorite movies of all time and with that, it's safe to say that Almost Famous is 'almost' too perfect in every way.
