Review of Allied (2016) by Ian G — 02 Dec 2016
Allied is one of those throwback films that Hollywood seems to like to make, incorporating two sexy leads, in this case Cottilard and Pitt, and combining elements of Casablanca and English Patient to boot where the two leads meet while on assignment in Casablanca to eliminate a prominent German officer, and fail to keep it strictly business and continue their affair and become married when they reach home in England, only to find ghost of their meeting a few years later when one is revealed to be a double agent recruited back into service for the Germans.
The costuming and art direction is very solid, especially the vintage places and cars Zemeckis recreated both practically and digitally, and Cottilard is the proverbial breakout performance of the piece as she is prone to be.
That being said the opening act tends to be a bore of the aforementioned English Patient kind, almost tedious and perfunctory to get the leads together without too many combined sparks. But once it becomes a potboiler thriller in the back half the proceedings more than makes up for the films short comings.
Mixed back but not a wash.
