Review of Allied (2016) by Charles G — 06 Dec 2016
So, I saw this a few days ago.
Some non-spoilery thoughts:
It's not as good as it could be. It is a pretty good story, though; just lacking in emotional punch.
I think part of the trouble is its star power; you just know that any of the potential hazards that might befall two spies in French Morocco during the second world war are not going to befall Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard. Additionally: Cotillard is getting freaking typecast to hell and gone. I won't say how since no spoilers, but she or her agent really need to get her a new character to play.
There's a curious lack of emotional turmoil that should have been present for this film, given what it evolves into; one should leave the theatre feeling a bit dazed and maybe ready to just go to bed for the rest of the day, but one doesn't.
