Review of Allied (2016) by Ali H — 21 Nov 2016
Of all the films I have seen in 2016, I would rank this in my top 5 films and would be Oscar caliber award season movie contenders. A throwback to the golden age of the cinema. A Shakespearian love story set during WW2 and behind enemy lines of occupied Europe and the nightly Blitz-kriek bombing of England.
This film puts you in the middle of a very intensive struggle of good versus evil and the morally ambiguous gray areas of counterespionage when two people find each other in such bleak and desperate times.
These sort of period piece films have the tendencies of often being overly romanticized. Allied puts the viewer on edge of constant suspense between life and constant death. In a time when people literally did not know if they would be alive tomorrow.
And they lived their lives like every day was their very last. This movie has everything and more you would expect from a WW2 period piece film. This film is layered together quite well from a narrative perspective and a genuine film lovers point of view.
Do yourself a favor and go see this brilliantly made film from director Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump). This film is rated R and not a family friendly film for the Thanksgiving movie weekend. But definitely for adults and worthy of the moniker "For your consideration" come award season.
