Review of Alleluia! The Devil's Carnival (2016) by Gimly M — 18 Dec 2016
I liked the expanding of the world of The Devil's Carnival, and I liked the portrayal of Heaven as being like golden age Hollywood (pretty from a distance, but tainted when you look closer), but overall I think Devil's Carnival worked better as a short rather than a feature.
It kind of starts to overstay its welcome, and Heaven isn't as much fun as Hell was (also Hell had better songs). Still, if you're a fan of Devil's Carnival, you'll probably enjoy this entry since it has a lot more of what you love.
The sets are gorgeous making full use of their miniscule budget, the performances are great, the songs are catchy, and the themes are interesting. The extended runtime does also manage to give more time for character development, so it ends up being a bit deeper in that regard than the original.
Overall I definitely like the first one more, but this is still a welcome entry in the saga. And with that painful cliffhanger ending, I can't wait to see what comes next.
