Review of Alleluia (2014) by Matthew S — 26 Jul 2015
The story seems borrowed from Leonard Kastle's effectve 1969 film, "The Honeymoon Killers" except this isn't at all a honeymoon.
Fabrice Du Welz fully puts Manuel Dacosse's cinematography skill to exceptional use. While Lola Dueñas approaches her role as if possessed. Laurent Lucas has never worked this well in any other film I've ever seen.
Not so much scary or even erotic, this tale of erotic obsession takes a very quick turn into the macabre. Du Welz is obviously a talented filmmaker, but the intention of this nasty little film is unclear.
Is it a psycho-sexual thriller? A twisted tale of sociopathic love? A careful study in style? A perverse dip into Gore Art Horror? Maybe an attempt to put one cinematic toe into The French Extreme?
Or maybe it's a really sick musical?
I don't know. I might be all of the above. The one thing I do know, is I could not stop watching it from the moment it started unit the credits finished.
