Review of All the President's Men (1976) by James H — 26 May 2011
For me, there is no better newspaper film (except maybe HIS GIRL FRIDAY). Director Alan J. Pakula was at the top of his game in the 1970s. He had just come off the successes of KLUTE and THE PARALLAX VIEW.
ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman, relays the events that led to the uncovering of the Watergate scandal/conspiracy in 1972. The film is uniformly brilliant: from the taught screenplay, to the natural performances, to Gordon Willis' striking cinematography.
The film also doesn't fall into the trapping of so many other based-on-a-true-story movies; there's no corny framing, so pompous ending. No, ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN is simply an absorbing thriller and one of the best films of the 1970s.
