The dated movie color palette sets to mood pretty early, as was the production design. Michelle Williams played the aggrieved mother with aplomb. It's just heartbreaking that she always get nominated for the Academy in years that there are more deserving women. Christopher Plumber was superb as the miserly patriarch who had the audacity to make a scraping-the-bottom deal with his grandson's kidnappers; that scene with Mark Wahlberg towards the end was a powerful acting as it can get.
