Review of All the Money in the World (2017) by Edwin C — 02 Sep 2018
Inspired by the true story of J. Paul Getty III's kidnapping. J. Paul Getty was the richest man in history during his time and like its title, he has All the Money in the World.
When his grandson was kidnapped, he refused to pay the ransom because if he did, he'd have 14 kidnapped grandchildren. And so this film is about the boy's mother's attempt to convince the grandfather to pay.
I have to admit this is the first Ridley Scott directed film in the thriller genre that I watched. I have only watched his other sci-fi films, and I gotta say he's quite good in thriller as well.
The casting in this film is spot on. Christopher Plummer plays the grandfather, and he steals the scene in every frame he's in. Probably due for an Oscar nomination later this month. His character was supposed to be played by Kevin Spacey but due to Kevin's sexual accusations, he was replaced by Chris. And I honestly cannot picture Kevin in this role.
Then we have Michelle Williams as the mother. Michelle is also another amazing actress who never fails to impress us. Although the competition for Best Actress in the coming Oscars is tough, Michelle just might get a nomination thanks to her nomination in the Golden Globes.
Ridley Scott himself is also due for a Best Director award for sure. It's a shame that these Oscar caliber films are not given enough attention in our country.
I'm gonna skip on Mark Wahlberg's character because his character was pretty much useless. He's like an extra. A name added to the film to sell it.
The film's cinematography and score is also pretty intense at times but nothing much to be excited of.
