Review of All the King's Men (2006) by Ry B — 30 Aug 2007
A political drama that covers the themes of greed, corruption, manipulation, morality, and betrayal. I had not read the book, but was looking forward to the film as I had heard the story was based on the public service of Huey Long.
I was disappointed to find out that it merely used him as inspiration to create a fictional character and story. I enjoyed its complexity, as I do with most political dramas or thrillers; however the film was rather slow at times.
It is told from the perspective of Jude Law's character, but Sean Penn's acting and imitation of Huey Long's mannerisms over shines Law. James Horner's score is noteworthy, especially during the speech scenes.
I was left wanting to read the novel, which I'm sure is superior.
