Review of All Star Superman (2011) by Colin C — 24 Feb 2011
I never read Grant Morrison's award-winning 12-book series which ran from 2005 to 2008. But I will say I think recently deceased writer Dwayne McDuffie does an outstanding job at quite possibly bringing the most human, intelligent version I've ever seen of Superman.
Luthor has concocted a scheme that puts Superman in peril as he saves a manned mission to the sun. By saving the crew, Superman has exposed himself to the sun to the point it is killing his cells.
With only a year to live, Superman basically goes about his bucket list. This is an interesting question -- what does someone like Superman have left to do. We follow him as he reveals his identity to Lois, makes amends with Lex and saves the city of Kandor. There are a bevy of other surprises as well.
Recently, someone said a movie's experience actually begins after we've watched it. All we were doing for the previous two hours was downloading.
If that is the case, the animation from Superman struck me. It's adult and adds a type of humanity to my favorite superhero.
As for the voices, I guess it will always be hard to top Tim Daly, Clancy Brown and Dana Delaney. To me, they will always be Clark, Lex and Lois. But James Denton does do a nice, subdued job as Kal-El.
This is the one of the best of the Direct to DVD DCU animated films. RIP Dwayne. You will be missed.
