Review of All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) by Olivierpiel — 30 Oct 2022
As a Germanophile French (a rare breed), I was left extremely disappointed by this adapatation of Remarque's masterpiece. It fails to adequately capture the nihilism and despair of the book which the 1930 American version actually did better.
the cinematography is vastly inferior to any WWI movie made before (Paths of Glory and 1917 are much more compelling). The Compiègne negotiations are laughably preposterous and thrown in as a distraction.
It's just a paint-by-the-number Netflix exercise. As usual.
