All Quiet On the Western Front is one of the most powerful anti-war films ever made. It strikes me as a cinematic rendition of the Wilfred Owen poem â??Dulce et decorum est.â?? At times it is a bit theatrical by modern standards but it remains honest as it expresses the psychological and physical devastation that war can wreak.
The special effects and realism during the â??actionâ?? sequences are precocious for a film of 1930 and produce a horror comparable to that of Saving Private Ryan. The film covers a lot of ground showing that the tragedy of war is entrenched many miles behind the trenches in the hearts and minds of the citizenry that promulgate it.
