Review of All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) by Anne F — 03 Aug 2008
This is one of the best war films I have ever seen; its message, most definitely anti-war, is portrayed so eloquently. From beginning "It's Behn, my friend" "It's a corpse no matter who it is", to end "All they know how to do is die" this film is stunning. I didn't even fast-forward through the battle scenes (that's a very bad habit of mine). The end of the film had me in tears...
And a post script - I've just looked at the BBC news - the three soldiers killed in Afghanistan on Sunday were aged 19, 19 and 22. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose. (apologies to the French - the cedilla and circumflex turn into gibberish here).
[I've just watched the film again - I still found it very profound].
