Review of All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) by David F — 17 Jan 2010
Landmark anti-war film through the eyes of young German soldiers fighting in WWI has lost some of it's power of the years, but it was the Hurt Locker of it's time. Still impresses a great deal even today in spite of its early-talky histronics and stagey, stiff and stilted delivery.
Fine ensemble makes for a vivid recreation of esprit d'corp. Ayres best moment is where he asks forgiveness from the French soldier he just killed. Final image still has a good deal of impact.
