Review of All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) by Ricardo O — 04 Feb 2011
One of the 10, maybe even 5 greatest war films ever made. It's been over 80 years now since it was first released but time has not diminished one bit of the power that the film's anti-war message carries.
The battle scenes are some of the greatest scenes ever shot. They're just so damn real, so real that the footage has often been used in documentaries about the Great War. Well deserving of the two Oscars it won.
It's too bad it didn't win for it's powerful screenplay or the fantastic cinematography. The dolly shots during the battle scenes alone should have secured that award. Either way this is a film that cannot be missed.
An essential piece of cinema. 10/10.
