Review of All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) by Randall A — 11 May 2011
An anti-war movie that dosen't feel preachy, All Quiet on the Western Front is the Gold standard of war pictures from the 1920's and 30's. It's a daring film considering that it's an American film that shows the German perspective.
It gets one to feel sympathetic towards the German soldiers by showing the fact that much like American soldiers they had no choice but to fight, it was their homelands mandate. Ahead of it's time in many ways it definitely deserved it's Best Picture Oscar.
Very few things are as powerful image wise in cinema as the last moments of this film are.
