Review of All of Me (1984) by Steve W — 03 Jan 2011
A manic and silly comedy, but terribly underrated. It has plenty of memorable lines and funny moments, but is definitely carried by Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin.
Steve Martin plays Roger Cobb, a jazz playing lawyer. Although he would rather be a musician, he realizes in order to win his girlfriend's hand in marriage he'd have to just do law. This is only the beginning, and those with the patience to get past the set up are richly rewarded.
The character development is present in both Martin's lawyer, and Lily Tomlin's bedridden rich woman. She has her mind set on moving her soul into the body of a willing younger woman, until a mishap occurs and she ends up in Cobb.
Then the hijinks come out. Steve Martin is unmmatched in his physical comedy, not needing special effects to show the soul moving around. Just a mirror reflection is enough to satisfy the viewer. Lily Tonlim also goes over a character arc and does much with her limited screentime.
An underrated and pleasant little comedy gem, All of Me is very enjoyable and very funny.
