Review of All Is Lost (2013) by Jeffrey M — 21 Feb 2014
Robert Redford had me spellbound from the beginning. He proved that a film can be outstanding and convincing, simply with great old-fashioned acting and little dialogue - all carried by one person. This should have earned him an Oscar nomination, especially since the Academy thought Sandra Bullock deserves one for Gravity, the other film from 2013 with few actors. When I compare the two, Redford was the better actor of the two, hands down.
I think about how much Sandra Bullock talked her way through "Gravity," and I'm reminded of a rhyme in the Dr Seuss book, "Hop on Pop." It goes like this: THING SING That thing can sing! SONG LONG A long, long song. Good-by, Thing. You sing too long. I guess I just like things a little less polished and a little more raw. This film will be remembered.
